Pouch market in USA is expected to grow at 6%, will reach US$8 bln by 2012

Freedonia has recently concluded that US market of pouch will grow by an average of more than 6% and will reach US$8 billion by 2012. The food and non-food sectors combined will primarily be driven by continued expansion in the stand-up pouch sector and gains for flat pouches in certain markets.
Pouches will continue to expand their presence over many other types of packaging due to aesthetic appeal, reclosable components, portability, light weight and reduced material use. Stand-up pouch demand, in particular, is expected to increase almost 10% pa through 2012. As environmental impact and raw material costs are increasingly becoming a major concern for food and beverage manufacturers, Freedonia predicts that the pouch growth will be fueled by the advantages pouch manufacturing equipment can offer in terms of reduced processing and shipping costs. Improvements in pouch manufacturing technology, such as machinery with increased line speeds, will continue to lower production costs, thereby making pouches more competitive with other forms of packaging like cartons and cans. Flat pouch advances are also forecast to be supported by a rapidly expanding market for small tube-shaped pouches with single-portion packages of products such as drink mixes, candy and sweeteners.
Another recent report from the Freedonia group forecasts that the increasing popularity of convenience and prepared foods will play a large part in the growth of converted flexible food packing. Demographic changes such as greater numbers of single-person households and older consumers will support the demand for more convenient prepared foods and single-serving portions, sometimes in multi-packs. Material consumption will increase as smaller portions tend to use more packaging relative to their size. Convenience-orientated or processed foods also often use more costly, higher barrier packaging materials for extended shelf life.
US demand for frozen food packaging is projected to reach US$6.5 bln in 2011, aided by heightened demand for convenience- type foods, among consumers as well as foodservice establishments, the prevalence of microwave ovens and technological advances in packaging. Demographic trends will influence demand: smaller household sizes, ageing of the population and rising numbers of households where all adults work, will boost demand for convenience foods, including frozen products. These foods often use more packaging relative to their volume. Moreover, increased spending for meals eaten or prepared away from home will bode well for frozen food packaging as the foodservice industry relies heavily on frozen foods. Technological advances in plastic films will continue to be a key factor in the improved quality of products steamed in their packaging. Among frozen food packaging products, fastest growth is anticipated for pouches as a result of solid prospects for stand-up pouches, often at the expense of rigid containers. Opportunities for stand-up pouches will be based on advantages of excellent visual appeal, product differentiation, compatibility with upright freezer cases, convenience and reclosability. Healthy gains are also expected for flat pouches due to the incorporation of such convenience features as resealable zippers, spouts and tear notches. Boxes are expected to register more moderate gains, the result of inroads by bags and pouches into traditional folding carton applications. Still, prospects will be boosted by heightened demand for boxes with value-added features such as higher quality graphic design and microwave susceptors, which facilitate browning of frozen hand-held foods, pizza, french fries and other products for which crispness is desirable.
