Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) bottles that have captured the
imagination of packaging all over the world in the last two - three
decades, have finally achieved an honourable position in India with
over 1.5 billion bottles (1.5 bottles per person) and at about 43kt
usage in 2000. Food products alone consume almost 40kt. Carbonated
soft drinks and mineral water alone account for almost 45% of the
present consumption. Alcoholic beverages particularly hard liquors
have also been increasingly packed in PET containers. Beer is a
new entrant in the PET bottle packaging. It is expected that PET
bottles will continue to grow conservatively at 20% over the next
decade to reach a level of almost 300kt. This is quite possible
as the FMCG sector, a driver for PET bottles will get a boost due
to the changing scenario of Indian society. PET bottles with insignificant
consumption (say about 3kt) in 1990 is definitely a winner of the
last decade of the millennium in the Indian Plastics industry.
