There is a shortage of Polycarbonate in the World
:
New capacities are likely to be developed in next two - three years.
Acrylic plastics having an excellent clarity could possibly replace
Polycarbonate in some of the applications where impact strength
is not a critical requirement. Indian Acrylic plastics industry
comprising of almost 3000 players among processors, fabricators
and traders and is concentrated on a small scale. They could take
advantage of the scarcity of Polycarbonate and enhance the growth
of Acrylic plastics beyond 12.5%, the rate at which Acrylic plastics
is growing in India presently. The leading raw material suppliers
of Acrylic Plastics like Atoglas and Rohm have been developing the
use of Acrylic in Optical Media Market such as DVD, VCD, etc. In
fact, Polycarbonate consumption in India seems to be stagnating
possibly due to non availability of material in India.
GE Plastics supplies Polycarbonate in India has curtailed its manufacturing
in India :
The Annual Conference organised by SAPMA (Small Scale Acrylic Plastics
Manufacturing Association) on 23rd February, 2001 at Mumbai echoed
the opportunity that is available due to shortage of Polycarbonates.
The conference also highlighted the overall present consumption
of 45KT of Acrylic Plastics in India. This does not include the
Acrylic material that is used for chemical industry. While it is
well known that considerable amount of recycled monomer and recycled
product is used in Indian industry, it is not very clear whether
45KT excludes the usage of recycled product. However, the manufacturing
capacity of domestic producer (GSFC) is grossly inadequate.
