A new mould technology yields faster production through efficient heat transfer

The beverage gaint Coca-Cola has recently adopted a radically new mould technology called SMX from Metallamics Inc, Michigan, USA. SMX indicating Shape Making heat exchangers moulds have 2-4 times greater heat transfer coefficients than the conventional moulds. Increased productivity, by 10-15%, is achieved through cycle reduction for PET preforms. SMX moulds do not have cooling channels. The skin of the mould is supported with a porous structure that permits turbulent flow of water. It is claimed that SMX moulds achieve surface temperatures accuracy within ±2°C of the designed mould temperature
