Will high performance TPSiV elastomers replace conventional thermoplastic elastomers?

Thermo Plastic Silicon Vulcanizate - TPSiv is an alloy of Sillicone rubber with Engineering Thermoplastic materials like Polyamide.

TPSiv has high temperature elastomeric perfomance of sillicone rubber with the thermoplastic behaviour of engineering thermoplastics.
TPSiv has good thermal properties and is a high perfomance elastomeric material that can have a continuous temperature as high as140ºC.
It can exhibit good abrasion resistance.
Their high performance at elevated temperatures make them suitable for automative applications, where resistance to oil and chemicals at higher temperatures are key property requirements.

It is therefore not surprising that they cost much higher compared to the conventional TPOs (Thermoplastic Olefinic Elastomers) or other thermoplastic elastomers. The high cost restricts its usage only for very demanding applications. The Processing cost, because of predrying for 6-8 hours at 80ºC, to eliminate moisture, is also higher compared to the other Thermoplastic Elastomers.

However for demanding applications like tubing for petroleum industry, TPSiv is the ideal choice. The supplier of TPSiv has increased development activities and is exploring new applications and new marketing regions like Japan and China. It would therefore not be surprising that TPSiv would find more applications in the near future.
