Packaging is considered to be one of the largest and key market
segments of plastics. In fact more than one-third of the world plastics
cosumption is in the packaging sector. A recent study conducted
on plastics packaging suggests that plastics will grow atleast 50%
faster than the traditional materials used in packaging. Flexible
plastics packaging is expected to out-perform rigid plastics packaging.
An increasing level of food products are likely to seek flexible
plastic products for packaging. The rigid plastic products such
as HDPE containers or PET containers are also expected to grow more
in the developing region since their markets in the developed regions
are more matured. The packaging of beer could enhance growth of
PET containers. While there is some anxiety about the economic slowdown
in the next few years, the past experience has shown that use of
plastics in packaging will continue due to their cost-effectiveness.
In fact, plastic packaging has been found to be recession-proof.
Food, beverage, health care and a host of other products are essential
for people and are therefore not expected to cause any decline for
plastic packaging materials.
