Plasticon Awards are offered by PLASTINDIA
FOUNDATION during every PLASTINDIA Exhibition to recognize the accomplishments
of the Indian plastics entrepreneurs involved in supply of plastic
products. The awards aim to encourage the Indian plastics industry
to excel in new product development that not only helps in accelerating
the growth of the plastics industry in India, but also in conservation
of scarce resources.
During the recently concluded 5th PLASTINDIA Exhibition
at Delhi between 15th Feb-20th Feb.2003, a glittering function was
held on 16th February, 2003 in the august presence of Honourable
Shri Ram Naik, the minister of petroleum and oil, Govt. of India.
The function also had Mr. M.P.Taparia, the doyen of the Indian plastics
industry as the guest of honour. The entire spectrum of the plastics
industry was witness to the felicitation of the 7 Indian entrepreneurs,
including 2 women entrepreneurs, who won the Plasticon Awards 2003.
These 7 award winners came from the organized and SSI sectors. A
few of the winners have won this prestigious Plasticon award earlier,
reflecting their innovation skills. These winners indeed developed
and commercialized some very interesting products in India in 2001-2002.
We took the opportunity to talk to the winners during the cocktails/dinner
that followed the award ceremony. We thought of sharing our impression
of the Plasticon Awards with you:
Gharda Chemicals was awarded for developing an alternate technology
for manufacture of high performance PEEK polymer. PEEK has been
produced by Victrex before Gharda Chemicals developed the product.
The World has therefore now an alternate source of PEEK. Gharda
Chemical has patented the alternate technology that is claimed to
be quite competitive. Gharda Chemicals earlier was awarded for development
of the other engineering plastics material in 2000. While Gharda
Chemicals is a relatively new entrant to the field of plastics raw
materials, it is considered to be very innovative in agrochemicals
as well as fine chemical areas and has won several awards from the
leading Indian Chemical Organizations like ICMA. Dr. Gharda from
Gharda Chemicals specially came to Delhi to receive this prestigious
award at the hands of Mr. Naik. His excitement indeed reflected
the creative mind behind the technology developments.
Essel Propack Ltd was awarded for developing a long nozzle tube
from an advanced Polyolefinic material. The product has been well
appreciated by several FMCG producers not only in India but abroad
as well. Essel Propack Ltd. is the 4th largest producer of plastic
tubes in the World. Continuous innovative development is a key factor
that helps in catering to the stringent needs of the FMCG producers.
Essel Propack, a very large producer in China had last year started
a production unit in the most demanding region of USA. Mr. M. K.
Banerji of Essel Propack was very happy to learn that his efforts
for more than 3 years development was recognized by the plastics
industry. He is in process of developing some newer concepts with
advanced Polyolefins and is eager to participate in the next Plasticon
Awards in 2006.
Aakar Packart, a SSI unit from Vadodara has been a very innovative
and continues to develop newer concepts and developments for the
packaging industry. In fact, it has been receiving packaging awards
from Indian Institute of Packaging. Aakar Packart developed a small
but very innovative moulded container with bellow for packaging
of delicate tablets to prevent breaking.
Pearl Polymers Ltd., a pioneer of PET containers was awarded for
a very useful and yet very aesthetic new pack for Signature whisky.
Signature whisky was promoted in crystal clear PET external container,
designed with a handle. This new pack not only helped in boosting
aesthetic appeal of Signature, but provided a very useful household
container for the housewife. Pearl Polymer is also an earlier recipient
of the Plasticon Award in 1997.
Genesis International, a new SSI entrepreneur was recognized for
developing PP moulded compression fittings with excellent surface
finish and design. Polyolefin pipes require easy and leak proof
fittings to avoid heat welding. While the concept is known for quite
sometime, there have been a very few producers of such fittings
in India. With the local availability of compression PP fittings,
the development of PE pipes in water distribution in India will
get accelerated.
Trend Plastpouchpack P. Ltd, a producer of flexible pouch pack has
recently diversified into newer products and has developed a metallized
plastic reflector from PET film/sheet to be used in place of metal
reflector in flourescent lights. Continuous development is a forte
of Mr. Bipin Shah, the director of Trend Plastpouchpack P.Ltd. Mr.
Bipin Shah was beaming with great excitement. He had all reasons
to, since this was his fourth Plasticon Awards. He felt that his
continuous search for newer developments has helped him to feel
very satisfied.
Nivedita Plastics promoted by two sisters in Nagpur, was awarded
for the development of moulded root trainer from PE. These moulded
root trainers provide an alternative to growth of plants with great
success. The Jog sisters from Nivedita Plastics from Nagpur were
very surprised and could not believe that they have won the award.
They have been doing great work in promoting plastics in agriculture.
All the award winners were given beautiful bronze trophies along
with cash prizes of Rs. 50,000 each at the hands of the honourable
Shri Ram Naik and Shri M.P.Taparia, during the presentation ceremony
that lasted for about 1 hour. The function continued after the presentation
ceremony until midnight in which the entire plastics industry celebrated
along with the winners of the Plasticon 2003 Awards.
We from www.plastemart.com
as the leading plastics portal of India take this opportunity to
congratulate the winners of Plasticon Awards 2003. We are also extremely
happy that one of our advisory board member Mr. Bipin Shah won the
prestigious award for fourth time this year.
